Los Pescaderos ('Los Pilones'), Gaucin, Saturday 20 December 2014

It's a while since I posted; I have been walking, but generally the same routes as I've covered before so I haven't put anything up. This morning we were showing a teacher from Gaucin primary school part of the route of the 'pescaderos,' that runs from the turning to Estacion de Gaucin (El Colmenar) down to the Herizza hotel, and is known locally as Los Pilones. The pescaderos is an old route taken by fishermen bringing their catch up from the coast to Ronda and the white villages; much of it passes in the shade of ancient oak trees and follows what is likely to have been a Roman road that ran from Vesci (in the vicinity of where Salitre is today) to Lacipo near Casares. Throughout the route there are great views over Jimena de la Frontera towards the Alcornocales National Park.
